Material options for CNC cutting

We work with a wide range of materials, each offering unique benefits for different applications. Below are our most commonly used materials and their specific advantages:

CNC cut Plywood

Plywood is hard to beat for strength, stability, and versatility. As a result, it is frequently used in a variety of applications, including CNC cut custom cabinetry in kitchens and bedrooms, kids’ toys, and business signage. Made from thin laminated layers of wood (birch, bamboo, or other materials), plywood offers:

Very low moisture content making it ideal for modern constructionm
Moisture resistance suitable for outdoor and marine applications
Excellent dimensional stability and reduced tensile stress
Perfect for custom cabinetry, kitchen fixtures, kids’ toys, and business signage

Solid wood CNC cutting

CNC machines can cut solid wood with ease, but working with solid wood requires special considerations. Unlike MDF or plywood, which have cross-laminated or no grain, solid wood’s grain direction must be factored in, and proper feed rates and speeds are crucial.
While CNC cutting of solid wood often requires more finishing work, the final result is unmatched in quality. Solid wood’s natural resistance to chips and dents makes it an ideal choice for CNC routing. It also holds screws exceptionally well, making it perfect for braces and structural components in furniture construction.

Grain direction is carefully considered for optimal results
Proper feed rates and speeds ensure clean cuts
Superior resistance to chips and dents compared to manufactured boards
Exceptional screw-holding capabilities for structural components
Ideal for high-end furniture, decorative pieces, and heirloom-quality items
Available in native New Zealand timbers and imported exotic species

CNC cut MDF

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a man-made material that comes in flat boards. It’s commonly used in carpentry and cabinet making, as it’s a stable and uniform material. MDF is made from ground wood chips and sawdust, which are mixed with resin and then subjected to intense pressure and high temperature. This creates a board that can be seen in cabinets, beds, speakers, and other wooden products.
Since MDF is generally cheaper than solid wood species, it helps to lower the cost of wooden products. The properties of MDF as described above make it a perfect candidate for CNC milling material. It can be easily machined and processed, it’s uniform and stable and can be finished to a high degree. That, coupled with the fact that it’s relatively cheap, is why MDF is a base material for a variety of projects, including home decorations and Christmas decorations, sign engraving, and more.

Manufactured from ground wood chips and sawdust bonded with resin
Generally cheaper than solid wood for cost-effective production
Uniform composition allows for intricate detail cutting
Can be finished to a high degree with paint or laminate
Ideal for home decorations, Christmas ornaments, sign engraving, and interior components
Available in various thicknesses from 3mm to 25mm

CNC cut Acrylics

The versatility of CNC routers allows for cutting and engraving various materials including acrylic, commonly used in sign-making and decorative pieces.
They are a stable option for use both indoors and outdoors, in any environment. Overall, acrylic sheets are a superior material choice for signage when compared to other options.

For modern, sleek applications, acrylic offers exceptional clarity and versatility:

Lightweight and durable alternative to glass
Resistant against weather and harmful UV rays
Shatter-resistant for safer installations
Stable for both indoor and outdoor applications
Available in clear, colored, and frosted finishes
Perfect for signage, display stands, protective barriers, and decorative elements
Thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 10mm available
